I have been a patient to about 5 different massage therapists. For all
but the last therapist, I've had my massage while wearing underwear,
and of course was draped appropriately. I've always wondered if I was
able to go nude, but never had the confidence to ask and worried I may
look like a pervert. Most times the therapist would say to strip down
to my underwear and cover up with the blanket on the massage table.

My last session was with a new therapist. As she never said anything
about undressing to my underwear (she said just to undress and place my
clothes on the chair), I hestitantly decided to strip off everything.
I was a little nervous as I didn't know how she would react.

Once the session started, I thought I better ask if it was okay that I
didn't have underwear on, and she said that was fine. She eventually
asked if I would like my glutes worked on. I said I would. I really
liked my glutes massaged as they get tight like any other major muscle
group. I started to wonder why the other therapists I went to see
didn't ever work on this body part.

My question is as follows. What is the general rule with the dress
code underneath the draping? For the therapists out there, if you do
have patients that are completely undressed, what percentage of your
clientale choose this? And lastly, is it inappropriate to ask for
glute work? I don't want to come across as though I'm a pervert
looking for a quick thrill, but I do enjoy the freedom of being nude
and find a gluteal massage beneficial.

Looking for therapists point of view.

I tell new people they *may* leave their shorts/panties on if they're
more comfortable that way. I usually don't say anything to clients
who've had massage before unless they ask. Most therapists are taught
that if a client has their glutes covered not to work on them - only if
they're uncovered. I do anyway, through their clothing or moving the
leghole aside if they're loose enough, and especially if they mention
lower back pain. Many times it's from tight hip muscles. You can ask to
have them massaged, some therapists might not though.

i've been to about fifteen or so (5 men, ~10 women) over
the last dozen+ years, and i've always removed all my
clothing except for one, and that was a guy who didn't use
draping and said to leave my underwear on. I think this
was just the way he worked with guys, nothing weird or
anything, & would have used draping if i'd asked... i say
this because he was referred to me by my own mother (who
was a regular client of his) and knew i was her son!

i want mine worked on, but it seems most don't... out of
all of them, only two have, & both were women. One i
thanked for it, mentioned that most don't do it, & she
acknowledged it was fear that it would be misconstrued as
sexual. But there is a huge mass of muscle that connects
down there... so if done with pressure, not arousing at
all but immensely helpful.

btw, one who did it said her massage was something called
"thai" massage & wasn't done on a table, on the floor.
The other was some Asian woman who said she did something
called "tai nu" or something like that. Both had studied
in Asia, neither here... the only 2 i've seen who didn't
learn here. That itself is telling about attitudes, i
think. Also, those were my two favorite MTs. And the
only two who didn't do pretty much the same things as all
the others. Not much difference between most of them who
learned in the US, the exception being those who did
'trigger point' stuff.

Thai and Tui na are pretty similar and bear some resemblance to shiatsu.
Thai has more stretching, I think. Most asian bodywork is based on the
meridians and acupressure points, some of which may correspond to
trigger points, rather than muscles which western massage is based on.

When I was in school, I was told that if the client left their
underwear on, then they didn't want their glutes worked on. (Of
course, this doesn't help the folks who are getting their first
massage, and may not be familiar with that practice.)

I'll usually work the edges of the glutes, up to the leg hole of their
underwear, unless they specifically mention problems in that area.
It's always possible to work outside the sheet, but if there's any
question, the best thing to do is discuss the situation to be sure
everyone is clear on what's wanted. I had a client one time who said
she wanted her "hips" worked, and when I started working on her
glutes--outside the sheet--she got upset and ended the session.

...And then there was the guy who tried to start the session naked and
on top of the sheets, until I reminded him that I'd said he was to get
*under* the sheet; then later asked if glute work cost extra. I
suspect he was looking for the "other" type of massage.

I get a few new people who don't understand the instructions and are
lying on top of the sheets when I walk in. They generally have undies on
though, and I've had a few women who put on the robe (which is for going
to other rooms for other services) and are under the sheet with it. Some
may just be clueless.
