Non--Program MT Education

I'm looking to learn MT as inexpensively as possible. I also want to
learn at my speed, and not take classes in math and English. I
understand that NCBTMB provides an alternate path for examination other
than the path via formal training, and will consider training and
education obtained piecemeal, and documented in the Portfolio Review
Handbook. I learn very fast and very well by myself, and I'd like to
avoid the normally inefficient class route except for practical
learning.

Several that I have looked into (in Florida) require 9 months to over a
year in their programs, and their syllabi seem set for post-secondary
people. I don't want to waste time and money sitting in classes I've
already been through.

Can anyone suggest how I might learn the subject matter which all MTs
must necessarily learn through individual study - without a
one-size-fits-all course?

Thank you for your time.

Hi MJ - I got my NCTMB certification in November with high marks in all
categories through the portfolio review process. I used my 239 hours
from the Esalen Institute, anatomy class from Penn State, Reiki
certification from Spirit Dance Center, Cranio-Sacral therapy classes
from Synergy Massage School and Upledger Institute, Lymph Drainage from
Upledger, as well as Reconnective Healing and Aromatherapy classes to
make up the 500 hours.

To study, I bought a CD-Rom exam review program and the review book put
out by the National Certification Board. I studied pretty hard for a
couple months and soared through the test with great marks.

Good Luck. I think the portfolio review process is a great way to go!

Kathryn,

This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for! I also found a
cert review pub at our library, took the first test, and scored 81. I
found this encouraging, and reason enough for me to try to do this on
my own, and avoid sleeping through a redundant and expensive program.

Congratulations on your cert; I wish you great success; you seem to
have a knack for helping people.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.
